Launch a successful tech startup with these 3 tips

Launching a startup is difficult in any industry, but this is especially true for those who work in the tech world. If you are not strategic in how you roll out your product or service, you could soon find yourself swallowed up by the competition.

However, you can stop this from happening as long as you follow some simple guidelines. Because you likely won't have a lot of capital to work with at the beginning, you will need to make every dollar and moment count.

Here are a few helpful tips that will help you successfully launch a tech startup:

  • Create a solid business plan: You will need to have a guiding idea that informs all of the decisions you make. Having a solid business plan will show potential investors how serious you are about the business and lay the foundation for your success.
  • Hire the best possible talent: Of course, a startup would be nothing without the people working there. You should find those with a passion for what you are trying to accomplish, as this dedication will help carry the company through the rocky first steps.
  • Invest in targeted marketing: If you have not considered it before, the right marketing strategy can really get the word out your business out there. Be sure to target those who are in the desired demographic you want to reach.

3 ways tech startups can save money

If you have just launched your own tech startup, chances are very good that you will not have a ton of money in your budget to work with. This is true of most industries, but is especially apparent in the tech world, which often requires a good deal of expensive equipment.

However, there are steps you can take in order to cut how much you spend at the beginning. Once your startup becomes profitable, you can look to expanding your services and the people that you have on your full-time payroll.

Here are a few easy ways you can reduce your startup's expenses:

  • Find an engineer co-founder: Having a co-founder of the startup who is an engineer will give your company a huge advantage in a crowded field. Somebody on the ground floor of the business with the technical skills to develop a product quickly will be a valuable long-term team player.
  • Don't focus on office space: Instead of trying to get fancy office space right off the bat, hold off until you can actually afford something. You will already be spreading yourself very thin financially, you don't want to take on the unnecessary burden of real estate costs.
  • Only hire who you need: When your company grows and develops, there will be a need for many different employees in various departments. When you are just starting off, however, keep the staff as small as possible.

3 tech startup tips for building your app

These days, the tech world is constantly shifting around us. Nowhere is that more apparent than when it comes to apps, as it often seems as if there is a new app available to purchase and download every day. If you work at a tech startup, there is an entire world of potential.

However, you need to be careful about how you build your company around the development of an app. You want it to be as popular and successful as possible, which means going to whatever lengths necessary for you and your team to come up with something worthwhile.

Here are some tips to help you out:

  • Have patience: Chances are, your app will not come out perfect the first time around. While you constantly want to work toward it being ready for the market, you need to know that it will likely take some time before it can be presented and sold.
  • Push limits: The app market is constantly evolving, which means you need to stretch the limits of what is already possible and see where you can really make your mark. What hasn't been done before in this arena?
  • Solve a problem: If there is a problem that you don't see a solution for, that is what you should be working toward. Your app should serve a purpose that has gone underutilized or unnoticed by technology in the past.

3 ways to maintain a startup culture while expanding

The great thing about working for a startup company — especially in the tech industry — is the freedom it affords you while doing your job. It feels looser and more relaxed than a normal 9-to-5 position, all while you work toward the same goal of success.

When that success eventually finds your business, it is likely to grow and expand in ways you might not have anticipated. If you want to keep the startup vibe of the workplace even when you go more corporate, there are plenty of ways you can do so.

Here are some tips that will help you out:

  • Plan team building exercises: There should always be an effort to get employees to bond with each other. By planning out community building exercises and events, coworkers can get to know each other better and really foster a sense of belonging in the workplace.
  • Keep the departments small: People often respond better to working in smaller groups, so you can keep each department manageable by simply breaking people up based on different projects. That way, no matter how much the company grows, it will not lose that small feeling.
  • Offer lines of communication: Your company was founded on the ideas that came from your coworkers, so it is important that they always have a line open to each part of the company. Communication is essential to a business' success, so always be ready to hear new thoughts.

3 tips to successfully pitch your tech startup

If you are looking to pitch your startup to potential investors, there are certain steps you should take in order to make sure that the presentation goes as well as possible. Getting seed money in the early stages of your company can be the difference between success and failure.

As long as you follow a few simple guidelines, you will be able to pitch your company and get the money you need to really get the operation up and running. The main thing you should focus on is being able to relax and confidently explain what your company can offer.

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Always start with the problem: You should start off by addressing a problem in the tech world that your company is looking to solve. As long as you make your business seem vital to the community, it will be much more likely that you get investments right away.
  • Be as concise as possible: The worst thing you could do go on and on and lose the interest of the people you are pitching to. While it is important that you get to all of the necessary information, you want to do so in a succinct amount of time.
  • Lay out the potential audience: Of course, those who invest money with you will want to know when they can expect to get their money back. You can assuage them of any fears by talking about the audience out there who will need your product or service.

Hundreds gather at Connecticut robotics competition

This past weekend, hundreds of high school students from all across Connecticut gathered at Hartford Public High School, in the last district qualifying match for the New England Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology district championship competition.

The championship will be held sometime this April in Worcester, Massachusetts. Most of the nearly 40 teams who were competing this past weekend were residents of Connecticut, but there were several teams who traveled from other parts of New England, including Massachusetts and Vermont.

All the teams who competed found out in January what the game at the competition would be, as well as what tasks their robots would have to compete in order to win. Students, mentors and team coaches had six weeks to design and create a robot that could stack a recycling container on top of boxes and then launch pool noodles into those recycling containers.

To qualify to compete at the championship in April, a team had to win at least two or 10 district qualifying matches. For the teams who win in Worcester this April, they will move onto FIRST Robotics Competition championship in St. Louis, which will be held during the last week of April.

At the height of the season there is little rest for the robotics teams, according to a volunteer from FIRST Robotics, which sponsors these competitions. Students are always looking for ways to improve upon their designs, as well as fundraising for the next year and mentoring future teams that are still in elementary or middle school.

Connecticut companies to attend an international tech trade show

The Northeastern part of the United States has emerged in recent years as a leader in technology, no matter what the field. This is especially true when it comes to new technology in the research, design and manufacturing of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Connecticut in particular has major companies devoted to this area of expertise.

The regional supply chain of hydrogen and fuel cell technology includes nearly 1,200 companies that are directly involved in the manufacture, development and installation of hydrogen and fuel cell products. In 2012 alone, those businesses in this field contributed nearly $1.2 billion and almost 6,000 jobs to the economy of the Northeast.

Now, Connecticut will show how far it has come in the hydrogen and fuel cell world during an international trade show in Germany later this year. Hannover Messe 2015, which will be held from April 13-17 in Hannover, Germany, is the leading international event for industrial technology innovations.

Thee Northeast Electrochemical Energy Storage Cluster (NEESC) and the Connecticut Hydrogen Fuel Cell Coalition (CHFCC), both organizations based in Connecticut, will be attending the event in April. The purpose is to showcase the made in Connecticut hydrogen and fuel cell products, and bring attention to Connecticut as a leader in this area.

"This is a very exciting trade event for us. Connecticut will be represented well, which demonstrates the state's strong leadership in green technology, especially in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry," said Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development deputy commissioner Ron Angelo in a public statement.

Governor Baker proposes combining statewide tech agencies

While campaigning for the Massachusetts governorship in 2014, Republican Charlie Baker said that one of his main goals while in office would be to improve the economy of the state and reduce how much the government spends on certain initiatives. In his first proposed budget, Governor Baker appears to be making good on that promise.

The Baker administration is looking to make cuts wherever necessary. The governor is currently considering a plan that would merge several public agencies together in order to cut how much is spent on them individually. If the plan is ultimately approved, the public agencies that support the tech and clean energy industries will be one with the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

The new Massachusetts state housing and economic development secretary, Jay Ash, says that state officials from the Baker administration have been talking to business leaders across Massachusetts about the possibility of consolidating these groups. So far, nothing concrete has been decided by either the business groups or by state officials looking to make the changes.

The future funding for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, one of the major tech groups in Massachusetts, appears to be uncertain. When he unveiled his proposed budget earlier this month, Baker did not have any money listed for the agency, though a spokesperson for the governor said nothing is finalized and that doesn't mean the group will go unfunded.

This plan to combine the three major tech agencies and industries in Massachusetts would be a way to compromise between Baker's promise of budget cuts and the agencies' need for funding. Baker is currently reviewing all state agencies to determine the most effective ways government services can be delivered.
